AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE NEWBERRY OBSERVER 1890's - 1905's Part 2

A woman named Edith Greisser did some amazing work gathering names of citizens who lived in  Newberry, S.C., in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I've gone through the information that Edith gathered from the Newberry Observer and have extracted all of the African Americans who made the news and now I'm sharing that information with you.

I encourage you to focus on the names for the discovery of possible ancestors. Most of the news reported was extremely negative.

Boozer, Belton, his male, black infant was delivered by Mary Hodges, midwife, on 12/9/1915. Parents are Belton Boozer, farm laborer, born in SC, and Mary Carrs Boozer, born in SC, living in Newberry City. Boozer, Caroline, female, black, died 10/10/1902 of tuberculosis of the lungs. She was 74 years old, born in Newberry Co., SC and lived in Newberry, SC. for 37 years. Reported by Dr. T. W. Smith. Boozer, Elliott, male, black, died 1/2/1915 of consumption. The deceased was 39 years old, born in Newberry Co., South Carolina, lived in Newberry SC. Reported by W. A. Dunn M. D. Boozer, Esther May, female, black, delivered by Amelia Cromer, midwife, on 1/10/1916. Parents are Caleb Boozer, employed as a butler, born in Newberry Co. Boozer, Fannie, female, black, died 3/2/1908 of heart failure. The deceased was 60 years old, born in  Newberry SC, resided in Newberry City. Reported by P. G. Ellesor M. D. Boozer, Fed, colored, lost his home and 20 bushels of corn to fire. Page 8, Newberry Observer 11/18/1902

Boozer, Franklin, colored, aged, died at J. M. Workman’s Place on 6/8/1903. He was freed as a servant of the late Henry Burton. He has been on the Burton Place for 32 years. Page 8, Newberry Observer 6/12/1903.

Boozer, George and two of his children were poisoned by drinking milk containing quick silver. Recognizing the problem they quickly took the antidote and induced vomiting thus being saved. On the following day a Negro boy who was living on the place de-camped. It is no question as to who poisoned the milk. Newberry Herald 5/31/1883; Albert Myrick, the Negro boy charged with having quicksilvered Mr. George Boozer’s milk, was arrested at Helena last week by Chief of Police Fellers. A preliminary exam by Trial Justice Packer on 6/3/1883;  Myrick was committed to jail to await Court in default of bail which was fixed at $1000. The evidence is circumstantial. It is not certain the prisoner is guilty. Newberry Herald 6/7/1883

Boozer, Henry, male, black, died 5/17/1897, of phthisis pulmonalis. He lived in Ward 4,  was 27 years old, born in Newberry. Buried in Prosperity SC . Reported by Dr. J. H. McIntosh. (Record of Death Returns for the City of Newberry kept at the Newberry County Library.)

Boozer, Jim, colored, was arrested on suspicion of recent robberies in Newberry. Newberry Observer, 1/9/1895; Court of Sessions HOUSEBREAKING AND LARCENY, not guilty. Separate case: COURT OF SESSIONS, housebreaking and larceny, not guilty, Newberry Observer 3/27/1895

Boozer, Jim, colored, was arrested by Policeman Franklin for gambling. The Mayor, at a hearing, released Jim Boozer for lack of evidence. Newberry Observer 1/5/1899

Boozer, Larkin, colored, was “Cured” of not being able for the past 2 years to raise his hand above his head. It was done by a traveling medicine man going by the name of Mr. Leo. Newberry Observer, 10/31/1894

Boozer, Lewis, colored, caught attempting to rob a safe is in jail. Newberry Observer

Boozer, William, killed Luther Kinard, colored, who was trying to escape arrest, accused of stealing watermelons. Newberry Herald, 10/8/1879; Mr. Boozer, who killed the Negro last week, has fled. Newberry Herald, 10/15/1879; On 11/10/1879 William Boozer walked into the Court House and delivered himself to the sheriff. His trial then began. He was defended by Messrs. Johnstone, Pope & Fair. Boston, Lilla V. gave a select reading at the Colored Teachers Institute of Newberry, convening 6/19/1893. Newberry Observer, 6/29/1893

Boston, William, a colored laborer, dropped dead 9/11/1897 at Prosperity while working for Godfrey Harmon. He was lifting a mower when he died. Newberry Observer 9/15/1897

Bouknight, Augustus, male, black, delivered by Caroline Farrow, midwife on 7/26/1918. Parents are Gus Bouknight, farm laborer, born in Newberry Co., and Annie Sanders Bouknight, born in Newberry Co., living in Newberry City. Bouknight, George, colored, alias Dock Williams, nineteen or twenty years old, was a companion to a tobacconist. When the two were camped for the night George Bouknight hit the tobacconist on the head and robbed him. He then hitched a ride to town, bought some boots and cartridges. He then fled, being found in Edgefield. Mr. Fellers, police officer, took George Bouknight to the home of J. H. Bouknight who immediately recognized him as formerly belonging to his father. G. Bouknight had $19.75 on his person and a fine silver plated pistol. The tobacconist had remained unconscious since the attack. There is little hope for recovery. Bouknight, Willie, male, black, died 4/21/1916 of broncho pneumonia. The deceased was 2 years old, born in Newberry Co., SC., lived in Newberry. Reported by Van Smith M. Boulware, Johnson, male, black, died 2/18/1918, of senility. The deceased was 90 years old, born in SC, and lived in Newberry City. Reported by W. G. Houseal M. D. Bowers, George, colored, convicted of arson, burning of the property of J. D. Hairston, is sentenced to hang the 1^st Friday in September. Newberry Observer, 7/27/1893

Bowers, George, colored, was arrested for housebreaking and larceny and is in jail. Newberry Observer 6/1/1898

Bowers, Lang, colored, killed Cal Graham, colored. Mr. Bowers has not been captured. Newberry Observer 9/5/1889; Lang Bowers, an offer of $100 for the arrest of this criminal. He is described as 30 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, has lost the sight of one eye. Newberry Observer 10/10/1889; COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS, murder, true bill. Bowers, male, black, died 2/9/1900 of scrofulosis. He was 11 years old, born in Newberry, SC and lived in Newberry, SC for 5 years. Reported by Dr. J. M. Kibler. Burial was in the Colored Cemetery. Boyd, Ara, a colored woman, was arrested on a charge of arson. Page 8, Newberry Observer 1/28/1902

Boyd, Caroline, female, black, died 2/2/1915 of cardis sclerosis. The deceased was 50 years old, born in Newberry Co., South Carolina, lived in Newberry SC for 7 years. Reported by J. M. Kibler M. D. Boyd, General, colored, on Mount Zion road his horse became frightened and ran away. General Boyd ran after the horse, fell and broke his back, dying soon after. Page 8, Newberry Observer 3/7/1902

Bradfort, George, colored, 16 years old, fatally shot by Jack Philson, colored, 18 years old, at Captain W. A. McClintock’s place in Scuffletown, Laurens Co., on 9/16/1889. Newberry Observer 9/19/1889

Bragg, Henry, colored, well known carpenter, died at his home in Helena on 4/19/1902. His stepson is Dr. Zeb McMorries of Charleston. Page 8, Newberry Observer 4/22/1902

Brazaman, Eugene, male, black, died 4/27/1919, of tuberculosis. The deceased was 25 years old, born in Newberry, Co., SC., and lived in Newberry City. Reported by W. E. Bridges, J. B., colored, lost three children in a fire where he lived at O. B. Granger’s Place, located in Nicholas, Horry County. The children were alone at the time. Newberry Observer 2/14/1889

Bridges, S. S. Colored, died 8/12/1898. He was a member of the Legislature 1876. He has not been in Politics since and lived on farms. Newberry Observer 8/17/1898.

Brooks, Alice, colored, lost a 4-year-old child to death from burns. She lived on the plantation of M. M. Satterwhite, 11 miles from Newberry. When Mrs. Brooks returned to the house from getting water at a spring the child was standing at the door ablaze. She immediately threw water on the child and he fell over dead. Brooks, John, colored, was caught stealing potatoes, resisted arrest, and was shot three times. Page 8, Newberry Observer 1/24/1902; John Brooks, colored, an elderly man serving a 1-year sentence on the chain gang has been pardoned by the Governor. He still has the three bullets in his body inflicted on him by the police. Page 8, Newberry Observer 8/18/1903

Brown, Burdelle, female, black, died 2/10/1916 of croup and LaGrippe. The deceased was 1 month, 18 days old, born in Newberry Co., SC, lived in Newberry SC for 1 month, 18 days. Reported by James K. Brown, Carrie, female, black, died 2/4/1902 of broncho-pneumonia. She was 30 years old, born in SC and lived in Newberry, SC. for 30 years.  Reported by Dr. James M. Kibler. (Information from ‘Returns of Deaths within the City of Newberry’ – Book kept at the Newberry County Library)

Brown, Charley, colored, who lives on D. S. Satterwhite’s place near Bush River, went to Magistrate Chappell to make a complaint. The affair ended in an affray between the magistrate and Mr. Brown. Details are on Page 5, Newberry Observer 8/4/1903

Brown, Dan, colored, shot Marshal Fortune, colored, without provocation. Newberry Observer, 1/2/1890; Daniel Brown, colored, struck Tom Davenport in the head twice with a tub and in turn was shot in the breast by Davenport. He will recover. Newberry Observer, 2/23/1893

Brown, Dick, colored, took $30 from the cash drawer at the store of J. E. Prince & Co. He has confessed to the crime. Brown, Dick, colored, was arrested for stealing clothing from Jamieson’s Store. Fined $50 or 50 days on the chain gang. He is working on the chain gang. Newberry Observer 1/24/1901

Brown, Henry, colored, widower, pauper, 78 years old, died February 1870 of chronic rheumatism. Newberry County Mortality Census for the Year ending 6/1/1870. CALDWELL TOWNSHIP

Brown, infant, female, black, died 5/28/1900 of bronchitis. She was 7 months old, born in SC and lived in Newberry, SC for 7 months. Reported by Dr. C. W. Bishop, Health Officer. Brown, Jacob, a small Negro lad, on 4/15/1883 stole from an express car at the depot a package containing the works of two watches. He offered them for sale to Mr. Scholtz and when asked his name gave the name of another boy his own size and color. On 4/17/1883 he was captured by policeman Chappell and he was let off with 50 lashes well laid on by his father in the presence of the policeman. Newberry Herald 4/19/1883

Brown, Lizzie, female, black, died 12/10/1909 from being burned. The deceased was 30 years old, born in Prosperity, resided in Newberry City for 10 years. Reported by W. E. Felkner, Coroner. Brown, Will, colored, was arrested for theft. Newberry Observer 12/19/1891; Will Brown, colored, a porter for the store of John Kibler, took a ham and sold it to the restaurant in town. All parties involved were fined by the Mayor and Will Brown got extra punishment from his mother. Newberry Observer 5/12/1892

Brownlee, Wesley, colored, won a pistol from Jim Hardy, colored, in a gambling game. After refusing to sell the pistol back to Hardy he was shot at by Hardy but the misfire of Hardy’s weapon gave him time to return fire and kill Hardy. He is now in jail. The story is much in detail on Page 3, Newberry Observer 5/25/1899; He was granted bail of $1000. Caldwell, Drayton, colored, walking over an unfrequented section of land with an axe on his shoulder, around noontime, fell into a 40-foot dry well. He lives on Dr. Poole’s Place near Cross Anchor. Campbell, Steve, one of the oldest known colored characters about town ‘Old Steve’. He is a wood chopper by trade. He hid $290 in greenbacks in a cigar box under a floor in his house and found the rats had torn the money up for nesting. He was in the Mexican War as a manservant for Lieutenant John C. Simkins who afterward was a Col. in the Confederate War and was killed at a Battle of SC Coast. At the time of emancipation he was owned by Robert Ligon of Greenville who had bought him from Robert Campbell of Cross Hill, paying $5060 and 10 bales of cotton for him. At one time he belonged to Rev. Buford Wallace, a Baptist preacher of Edgefield who died at Glenn Springs about 50 years ago. Then he belonged to Thomas Atkinson. Steve had 4 wives and 2 sons. Follows a poem by Lieut. Simkins, a letter to a lady and a photo of Steve Campbell. Page 8, Newberry Observer 2/27/1903; Steve Campbell died 4/1/1903. An inquest determined death by natural causes. In his pockets was found $12.62. A picture included in the article was taken 6 weeks before his death by Otway Salter. His age was definitely over 90. Page 8, Newberry Observer 4/3/1903

Cannon, Cal, colored, had a shooting affray with Dan Lever, colored. Dan emptied his shot gun in Cal’s direction but only wounded Cal slightly in the back. Cal emptied his two guns in Dan’s direction but never hit him. Newberry Herald 5/17/1883

Cannon, colored, (no sex given), died Sept. 1886, of pertussis. Resided in Ward 3,  was 11 months old, born in Newberry Co., resided in Newberry for 11 months. Reported by Dr. James McIntosh. (Record of Death Returns for the City of Newberry kept at the Newberry County Library.) This seems to be the same person as the next person below but the report was made by a different physician.

Cannon, colored, (no sex or date of death given), died of pertussis, lived in Ward 3,  born in Newberry, was 11 months old, lived in Newberry for 11 months. Reported by Dr. James K. Gilder. (Death Record #50, 1886 -  Record of Death Returns for the City of Newberry kept at the Newberry County Library.) This seems to be the same person as the person above but the report was made by a different physician.

Cannon, Ed, male, black, died 5/26/1910, of septicemia caused by anthrax. The deceased was 38 years old, born in Newberry Co., South Carolina, resided in Newberry City for 1 year, 6 months. He was cleaning out the well that supplies the G & C RR, when it caved in on him. The well is ten feet square and has 14 feet of water. Cannon, Robert, colored, 14 years old, died 2/24/1883, after being treated by Dr. Pope for inflammation of the brain.  When the body was being prepared for burial a small incision was noted on the left side of the head. An inquest was done the next day and an autopsy revealed an incision in the head near the juncture of the occipital and parietal bones with a knife, the blade of which having penetrated the brain to a depth of one inch had broken off and remained in the wound. Two colored people testified seeing Robert and two other boys fighting with Anthony Henly near the schoolhouse. An officer sent for Henly, a boy of twelve, who tried to make his escape by running. Henly admitted the deed, claimed self-defense, and awaits trial in jail. Newberry Herald 3/1/1883

He went before the magistrate and was sentenced to 30 days on the chain gang. This is the 13^th time he has been sentenced on the chain gang. He had just finished his sentence on the chain gang for 30 days. He is now working an extra 20 days on the chaingang.
